Honorary Doctorates
• Congratulations to Dr. Molly Shoichet. In June 2022, Dr. Molly Shoichet was delighted to receive two honorary doctorates. On Monday June 6, Dr. Molly Shoichet is one of nine recipients who has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa (uOttawa). An honorary doctorate from uOttawa acknowledges that the recipient deserves to be recognized for their unsurpassed abilities due to life’s learning and experiences. (Photo forthcoming). On Monday June 13, Dr. Molly Shoichet is one of 14 recipients who received an honorary doctorate. The University of Alberta (uAlberta) presented Dr. Shoichet with an honorary doctor of science degree. An honorary doctorate from UAlberta acknowledges the achievements made by many, reflecting the diversity of their backgrounds, experience and contributions to society.

•  A Toronto-based company commercializing hydrogel-based drug delivery platforms, has raised $3.25 million CAD in seed financing from Sprout BioVentures, Viva Biotech, and Grey Sky Venture Partners.  AmacaThera’s founding technology was discovered at the University of Toronto by Dr. Molly Shoichet, a leading expert on polymer design. AmacaThera envisions their proprietary technology to allow sustained and controllable release of diverse therapeutic agents from injectable, biocompatible hydrogels.  Their first product, AMT-143, targets superior post-operative pain control with the goal of eliminating opioid use following surgery.  The funding raised in this round will be used to advance AmacaThera’s drug delivery platform technology through a Phase I clinical trial.

Electrostatic interactions improve drug delivery
University of Toronto researchers have found a way to embed drug compounds in nanoparticles so that they are released into the body at a controlled rate. In an article published in Science Advances, Malgosia Pakulska, Irja Donahgue Elliott, Jaclyn Obermeyer, Anup Tuladhar, Christopher McLaughlin, Tyler Shendruk and Molly Shoichet demonstrate how therapeutic drug proteins can be guided to the nanoparticle by purely electrostatic interactions between the protein and the nanoparticle’s surface.

• October 2011 – Congratulations to Ryan Wylie for successfully defending his PhD thesis. We wish Ryan continued success as he pursues a post-doctoral fellowship in Robert Langer’s laboratory at MIT. We would also like to congratulate Doug Baumann, PhD, on his new job at Syngenta.

• September 2011 – Congratulations to three new graduates from The Shoichet Lab. Howard Kim successfully defended his PhD and is now pursuing a career at Bayliss Medical. Jason Stanwick successfully defended his MASc and is pursuing a career at Apotex. Chelsea Nimmo successfully presented her MSc and is now pursuing a law degree at McGill University. Congratulations to Howard, Jason and Chelsea and best of luck in their new careers.

• August 2011 – Shoichet lab undergraduates sweep prizes at the annual Undergraduate Engineering Research Day (UnERD) symposium. Anthony Vo won first prize in the afternoon podium presentation session and Joshua Budman won second prize in the morning podium presentation session. Congratulations to Anthony and Josh! We wish Anthony great success at the University of Ottawa where he begins medical school and Josh best of luck as he returns to John Hopkins for his third year of Biomedical Engineering

• Another successful day was met when the Shoichet Bioengineering Research Team took part in the 2007 Rick Hansen’s Wheels in Motion

• In 2007 the Shoichet Group won the Wheels in Motion Community Wheelchair Relay at the Docks in Toronto.  The large silver bowl and individual gold trophies (above) were awarded to the five members of our “A Team”; while both the A and B Teams received beautiful gift baskets for winning their respective heats.  In the finals the A Team won with a time of 2:44 while the B Team was fifth in 3:18.  In addition to the relay trophies the Shoichet Group also placed 2nd across Canada in the Community Relay Fundraising Category.

• Shoichet Group would like to thank SARSTEDT for financial support and MEDI-Chair and Shopper’s Home Health Care for their expertise and generous donation of racing wheelchairs.  The Team would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to our friends, family, and colleagues for their support in 2007.

• This year (June 2006), the Shoichet group put together a corporate team, Shoichet Bioengineering Research Team. Along with the excitement of creating a team, Molly and her son (Emerson) were quoted in the Toronto Star.

• April 2015 – Congratulations to Dr. Katarina Vulic (PhD 2014). Katarina was recently offered the position of Senior Scientist at Novartis Insitutes for BioMedical Research. This comes off the heels of her having a relatively short intern placement at Novartis during which she excelled and she was also awarded a Novartis Spot Award. Her intern placement at Novartis is a position that she gained from being one of our first NSERC M3 award recipients!

• July 2014 – Congratulations to Dr. Yuanfei Wang (PhD 2013). Yuanfei was recently offered the Life Sciences Consultant position at Putnam Associates, a Boston-based pharma-biotech strategy consulting firm.

• July 2014 – Congratulations to Ms. Ankeeta Tadkase (BASc 2010), who has just graduated from medical school. She is now starting her residency in the Family Medicine department, University of Toronto.

• April 2014 – Congratulations to Dr. Paul Dalton (PDF, 1999-2002), who together with his family have moved to Germany, where he has now taken on a Full Professor faculty position in Biofabrication at the University of Wuerzburg.
