Retinal diseases cause blindness due to the death of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium. There is currently no way to regenerate photoreceptors after they die. Photoreceptor transplantation is a promising strategy that can replace dead host photoreceptors with healthy donor cells, but this strategy is limited by the laborious protocol to obtain donor cells and low yields. My research goal is to optimize the yield of photoreceptors from retinal organoids and to explore photoreceptor enrichment strategies for future clinical therapies.
