Project

The eye of non-mammalian vertebrates, such as fish and amphibians, contains a population of stem cells capable of proliferating and differentiating into new retinal cells throughout life. However, the adult mammalian eye lacks the ability to regenerate damaged cells lost after injury or disease due to retinal stem cell quiescence occurring in the early postnatal period. I am developing an affinity-based protein delivery strategy for the activation and subsequent proliferation of retinal endogenous stem cells to restore vision to the blind.
